May Birthstone
Emerald is one of the the most revered of all gemstones. The hues of green found in the depths of this gemstone call to mind the lushest of tropical rain forests. The ancient Egyptians mined this lovely stone over 4,000 years ago. Cleopatra was an avid collector, as well.
Emeralds are cut in a variety of different shapes and sizes. It may be found in the traditional "emerald cut", which is rectangular and step-cut. It is also found in rounds, ovals, squares, and cabochons.
It is the birthstone for the month of May, and symbolizes rebirth and youth. It is also regarded by some as an amulet for good fortune.
